Leon "Ndugu" Chancler (/ ɪ n ˈ d uː ɡ uː ˈ tʃ æ n s l ər / in-DOO-goo CHANSS-lər; July 1, 1952 – February 3, 2018) was an American pop, funk, and jazz drummer. He was also a composer, producer, and university professor.

Leon “Ndugu” Chancler was born in Shreveport, Louisianna, on July 1, 1952, but soon moved to Los Angeles with his family. He started teaching himself to play drums at age 13, getting advice from older musicians. While in high school he started playing Latin jazz with percussionist Willie Bobo.

Chancler, who passed away on February 3 at the age of sixty-five, “orchestrated” not only the music of top jazz artists, he backed pop stars, country legends, funksters, and rock icons alike. He was a man of many hyphens: a producer-composer-arranger-drummer-percussionist-vocalist.
