Speaking in Tongues is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Talking Heads, released on June 1, 1983, by Sire Records. After their split with producer Brian Eno and a short hiatus, which allowed the individual members to pursue side projects, recording began in 1982.

In his seminal Heads bio-graphy This Must Be the Place, David Bowman writes: “They still appeared more Addams Family than Brady Bunch, but they no longer seemed to be embittered.” The new congenial atmosphere allowed them to make their fifth great album, ‘Speaking In Tongues’, released in late May, 1983.

David Van Tieghem (born April 21, 1955) is an American composer, percussionist and sound designer, best known for his philosophy of utilizing any available object as a percussion instrument and for his collaborations with the experimental artists Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Steve Reich, Robert Ashley and David Byrne.
Speaking in Tongues was the first Talking Heads album to appear after the band's split with Brian Eno, as well as their first album to be written after a pair of successful side-projects (Tom Tom Club, Byrne's The Catherine Wheel). This predictably resulted in a record that was more eclectic and less "nuanced" than its immediate predecessors.
