A grandson of King George V and a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, he died in 1972 in an air crash while piloting his plane. He was the most recent child of George III to have porphyria, a genetic disorder that may have caused George III's mental breakdown.
The Duke of Gloucester is the late Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin and a full-time working member of the Royal Family. He is the second son of the late Duke of Gloucester and the late Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, and succeeded his father in 1974.
The only son of Queen Anne and Prince George of Denmark, he was born in 1689 and died in 1700. He was the heir presumptive to the English throne after the Glorious Revolution, but his death triggered the Act of Settlement that secured the Protestant succession.
