The nasal helmet was a type of combat helmet characterised by the possession of a projecting bar covering the nose and thus protecting the centre of the face; it was of Western European origins and was used from the late 9th century to at least c. 1250.
These helmets were created between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Norman conquest’s start and were a popular medieval European combat helmet. Spangen refers to the metal strips that form the helmet’s framework and could be translated as braces, and -helm means helmet.
Norman Helm. A vital part of a Norman warrior’s battlefield armour was the steel helm that he wore on his head. The Norman helm was conical in shape. It could be one of the two types in terms of its manufacture.

Norman helmet. From the Norman Conquest to the end of the 12th century, the Medieval Helmets were mainly of the type known as the "nasal helmet", a casque with an extension protecting the nose, hence the name. It was also known as the "Casque Normand", and it was surmounting the continuous coif.
By the end of the 11th century, most Norman knights were still wearing the tried-and-true Nasal helmet. However, during the great Norman expansion, the Norman knightly elite came face-to-face with Mediterranean civilizations employing large numbers of archers in their armies.
