The band was formed by Nigel Clark, Mathew Priest, and Andy Miller. Clark and Priest had previously played together in the trio Purple, who relocated from Worcestershire to London in 1988. They recruited guitarist Ben Lurie , who left the band after one week to join The Jesus and Mary Chain and was replaced by Miller.

Professor Nigel Clark. Research Overview. I look at how social life is shaped and perturbed by physical forces. The idea of the `Anthropocene’ prompts us to see human beings as geological agents. But I also want to ask how our species acquired its geological agency: what physical forces we’ve tapped into and joined up with.
