Richard John Whitney (born 24 June 1944), also known as John "Charlie" Whitney, John Whitney and Charlie Whitney, is an English rock musician and a founder member of the bands Family, Streetwalkers and Axis Point.
John “Charlie” Whitney, an integral part of the British rock band Family, occupies a significant place in music history. With his innovative guitar playing, Whitney helped define the band’s eclectic sound, which seamlessly blended rock, folk, jazz, and psychedelia.
Many of its members went on to different musical projects; Roger Chapman and John "Charlie" Whitney formed the band Streetwalkers; John Wetton played with King Crimson and eventually became the lead singer of the band Asia.
Streetwalkers were an English rock band formed in late 1973 by two former members of rock band Family, vocalist Roger Chapman and guitarist John "Charlie" Whitney. They were a five piece band which evolved from the Chapman Whitney Band.
In 1999, two decades after Chapman’s solo debut, Whitney released a solo album titled “John Whitney AKA Charlie Whitney.” This record, veering more towards electric than his work with Los Racketeeros, revealed Whitney’s unique vocal style, comparable in its distinctiveness to Chapman’s.
Family’s original band members included John “Charlie” Whitney (guitar, sitar, keyboards), Harry Ovenall (drums, percussion), Ric Grech (bass, cello, violin, vocals), Jim King (saxophone, harmonica, piano) and Roger Chapman (vocals, harmonica, saxophone).
FAMILY was formed in 1967 by John 'Charlie' Whitney (guitar, vocals), Roger Chapman (vocals), Jim King (saxophone, Flute), Ric Grech (bass) and Rob Townsend (drums) in Leicester. FAMILY plays a mixture of Rock, Blues and Folk interwoven with Classical and Jazz elements.
