Mary Russell is the protagonist of a series of detective novels by Laurie R. King based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. After her parents and brother are killed in a car crash, 15-year-old Mary returns to the family home on the Sussex Downs.
Plot. After losing her family in a tragic motor accident in California, fifteen-year-old Mary Russell goes to live with her aunt in Sussex, England. Wandering the Sussex Downs in April 1915, she literally runs across fifty-four-year-old Sherlock Holmes, who has retired from his London practice and keeps bees.

Mary Russell is a fictional detective featured in a series of books by American novelist Laurie R. King. The series is written in past-tense by an older Mary Russell, who tells her memoirs from about 1915 to 1920. She meets a middle-aged version of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, who becomes her mentor.
