City Life screened from 1996 to 1998 and made a direct appeal to New Zealand's Gen X apartment-dwelling demographic. Following the lives of a tight-knit group of friends, and featuring racy shots of Auckland's K-Road and nightlife set to contemporary Kiwi pop music, the show was Aotearoa's answer to Melrose Place.
A hunky doctor by the name of Damon South (guest star Kevin Smith) is the owner of the building and he lives in the penthouse apartment. All his ten tenants are also his very best friends. This lively gang of hopeful twentysomethings are: Ryan Waters (Charles. Mesure), a friendly, gay bartender at the gang's frequent hang-out bar The Lava.
Set in a bustling metropolis, the show explores the challenges and joys of urban life through the eyes of these endearing characters. From finding affordable rent to pursuing their passions, each episode finds the friends facing a new challenge, but they always have each other's backs.
