In 1972, Steve Canaday—who was to have a long relationship in and around the Daredevils until his untimely death in a 1999 plane crash—opened the New Bijou Theater in Springfield, Missouri. Lee worked there, and it was a popular club for young musicians and the counterculture surrounding them.
In 1972 a demo of “Black Sky” came to the attention of Columbia Records’ John Hammond when Steve Canaday, an associate of the band, charm-powered his way into a spontaneous office meeting with the famed producer. Canaday had co-owned the New Bijou Theater; he later became a member of the Daredevils.
