Obscure Alternatives was released in October 1978, only seven months after Adolescent Sex. As with the first album, Obscure Alternatives was commercially unsuccessful in the UK, but garnered moderate success in Japan, where it peaked just outside the Top 20.
BMG followed suit next year, and re-issued Adolescent Sex, Obscure Alternatives, Quiet Life, and Assemblage. All of these re-releases came in the ' digipak ' format, collecting many bonus tracks. In 2006, all were repackaged in jewel cases to allow sale at a lower price point.

The version of "Quiet Life" is exactly the same version as featured previously as track 9. The final three bonus tracks are live versions of "In Vogue", "Deviation" and "Obscure Alternatives", which were originally released in July 1980 as part of the Live in Japan EP which had been recorded in March 1980 in Tokyo.
