Between these two bookends, Powell covers a wide range of territory, including his tribute to George Benson with the reverent cover of the Bobby Womack tune “Breezin’,” and the title track, with its punchy groove underscored by drummer Harvey Mason and accented by Powell’s rich guitar work.
O’s Notes: Old school R&B fans will really enjoy this one as Doc revisits some cool classics. “Breezin”, “Sun Goddess” and “What’s Going On” are among the ten tracks. Guests George Duke (p), Marcus Miller (b), Patrice Rushen (p) and drummer Harvey Mason give it that special touch.
Harvey William Mason (born February 22, 1947) is an American jazz drummer, record producer, and member of the band Fourplay. He was the original drummer for Herbie Hancock ’s band The Headhunters .
97th & Columbus is his seventh contemporary jazz project and his first release on the Heads Up International label. It is a mixture of his own compositions and those of the musicians who were most influential in his life.
