The Thing from Another World, sometimes referred to as just The Thing, is a 1951 American black-and-white science fiction-horror film, directed by Christian Nyby, produced by Edward Lasker for Howard Hawks' Winchester Pictures Corporation, and released by RKO Radio Pictures.The film stars Margaret Sheridan, Kenneth Tobey, Robert Cornthwaite, and Douglas Spencer.
Although John Carpenter's remake, The Thing, with its focus on horror is closer to the original story by John W. Campbell on which both films were based, its tone is very different from this nuanced, beautifully filmed 1951 hard science fiction film which explores ethics and implications and prefigures some ideas arising later in the environmental movement.

The Thing from Another World would become a highly influential film among the '70s New Hollywood breed of directors; the aforementioned Joe Dante nods were legion, and John Carpenter prominently featured two scenes from the film in his groundbreaking horror classic, Halloween (1978).
