Schönhausen House under the Nazis and in the GDR. During the Nazi era, the palace was used for exhibitions and as a place to store artworks. 780 paintings and sculptures and around 3500 works on paper by proscribed artists were stored there, some of which were shown in the “Degenerate Art” exhibition.
Schönhausen Palace: A scene of German history During the National Socialist era, the palace was used as a central depot for so-called "degenerate art". Several thousand confiscated works of art were stored here and subsequently sold abroad. After the end of the Second World War, Schönhausen became the focus of the Cold War in the young GDR.
Schönhausen (Elbe) ist die größte Gemeinde im Landkreis Stendal. Das Dorf liegt reizvoll in der Flusslandschaft der Mittelelbe. The Schönhausen Palace Gardens have two faces: that of a lively, tree-covered public park with a meandering stream and that of a secluded, peaceful monastery garden. The reason for this is a wall that divides the park into different areas. The gardens were built at the same time as Schönhausen Palace and are located in the district of Pankow.
