P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang is a delightful and often hilarious coming-of-age tale with a real tenderness for Alan Duckworth’s small yet all-consuming triumphs and disasters. It might not all ring true, particularly the subplot involving the wartime exploits of groundskeeper Tommy, but the raw emotions it evokes certainly do.

Summer, 1948. 14-year-old Alan has just three wishes: that there will be lasting peace, that England will win the Ashes, and that he will finally kiss classmate Ann. Fourteen-year-old Alan Duckworth’s life is dominated by two obsessions: his passion for cricket and his awkward infatuation with Ann Lawton, a girl in his class at school. Derided by his friends and drifting his way through his education, Alan is forced to confront his adolescent lust when he and Ann are cast as lead roles in the school play, a pair of roles that will require them to kiss.
