As one of the most politically and economically stable countries in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean, Costa Rica attracts thousands of refugees seeking protection. Costa Rica currently hosts more than 100,000 refugees and asylum seekers, the majority from Nicaragua and Venezuela.
Refugees are people forced to flee their own country and seek safety in another country. They are unable to return to their own country because of feared persecution as a result of who they are, what they believe in or say, or because of armed conflict, violence or serious public disorder.
In 2020, Costa Rica hosted 121,983 people of concern, including 9,613 refugees and 89,770 asylum- seekers. Since 2017, the country has experienced a significant increase in the number of asylum-seekers, mainly from Nicaragua and Venezuela.
