Oliver Twist ist ein Gesellschaftsroman von Charles Dickens, der unter dem vollständigen Titel Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy’s Progress („Oliver Twist oder der Weg des Fürsorgezöglings“) von Februar 1837 bis April 1839 in Fortsetzungen in der Zeitschrift Bentley’s Miscellany erschien.

Oliver Twist is born in a workhouse in 1830s England. His mother, whose name no one knows, is found on the street and dies just after Oliver’s birth. Oliver spends the first nine years of his life in a badly run home for young orphans and then is transferred to a workhouse for adults.

In fact, Time Magazine's list of the top 10 most popular Dickens' novels put Oliver Twist in 10th place, even though it was a sensational success in 1837 when it was first serialized and contributed the treacherous villain Fagin to English literature.
