Leben. Kooper begann seine Karriere 1959 als 14-jähriger Gitarrist bei der Gruppe The Royal Teens, die durch den Nummer-3-Hit in den US-Charts Short Shorts bekannt wurde. Er wurde alsbald ein gefragter Sessionmusiker. Mit Bobby Brass und Irwin Lewine schrieb er etliche Hits, darunter This Diamond Ring, das 1965 ein Nummer-1-Hit für Gary Lewis & The Playboys wurde.

A Biography of Al Kooper. 1958 A professional musician since his early teens, Al Kooper enjoyed his first real taste of pop music success during the nascent days of rock and roll as popular music. He joined The Royal Teens, who had a Top 5 hit with the tune "Short Shorts" in 1958 and a Top 30 hit a year later with "Believe Me." Kooper was hooked.
