'Liberation' was The Divine Comedy's first full album. Released in 1993 it didn't sell especially well but received critical acclaim both in the UK and in France. The NME described it as “an array of seductive yarns.. glorious, gleeful tunesmanship." Dave Cavanagh, writing in Select said "..one of the bountiful, overflowing joys of the year.

The Divine Comedy celebrated its 30th anniversary by reissuing remastered versions of the band's first nine albums (from Liberation to Bang Goes the Knighthood) on LP and CD. All eleven albums were included in the box set Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time: 30 Years of the Divine Comedy, released in October 2020.

Flitting between highbrow and low brow, with tracks inspired by Fitzgerald (‘Bernice Bobs Her Hair’), Wordsworth (‘Lucy’) and Mr. Benn (‘Festive Road’), it’s a perfect introduction to Hannon’s intellectual vivacity and trademark wit.
