In 1922, the first Trudell Company was founded by George Stewart Trudell. The company imported artefacts and medical supplies for the Sisters of St. Joseph, founders and operators of St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, Canada. The focus soon shifted exclusively to medical products. By 1939, Geo. S. Trudell Company employed five people including George Otto Trudell, George Stewart's son.

John Trudell was born on February 15, 1946 in Omaha, Nebraska, and grew up on and around the nearby Santee Sioux reservation.
John Trudell (February 15, 1946 – December 8, 2015) was a Native American author, poet, actor, musician, and political activist. He was the spokesperson for the Indians of All Tribes' takeover of Alcatraz beginning in 1969, broadcasting as Radio Free Alcatraz.During most of the 1970s, he served as the chairman of the American Indian Movement, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
