The UN Human Rights Office, with its mandate to promote and protect all human rights, advocates for the universal abolition of the death penalty. Our position is based on the fundamental nature of the right to life, the unacceptable risk of executing innocent people, and the absence of proof that the death penalty deters crime.
The death penalty violates the most fundamental human right – the right to life. It is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. The death penalty is discriminatory. It is often used against the most vulnerable in society, including the poor, ethnic and religious minorities, and people with mental disabilities.

24 de may. de 2022 · At least 373 new death sentences were handed down in 19 countries, an increase of 22%, due to sharp rises in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mauritania, and despite a significant drop in Zambia. In July, Sierra Leone’s parliament unanimously adopted an Act which abolishes the death penalty for all crimes.
