Funchal fué fundada por João Gonçalves Zarco en 1421, aunque no adquirió el rango de ciudad hasta que el rey Manuel I de Portugal se lo concedió en 1508. La fertilidad de sus suelos y su localización hicieron que Funchal se convirtiera pronto en el centro económico y político de la isla.
