The College Pembroke College is the third oldest Cambridge College with around 750 students (undergraduates and postgraduate) studying a wide range of subjects. There are 80 Fellows who comprise the Governing Body of the College, most of them teaching Fellows. There are currently around 175 permanent members of staff.
Sport: Pembroke is known to be a sporty college. The football and netball teams are usually very strong. Depending on the year and current cohort, there are many other college sports teams that also may be active, including water polo, badminton, rugby, hockey, lacrosse, cross country, tennis and cricket. While I was navigating the many projects of my DPhil, I knew that I had an anchored support in my MCR, and with the wider community and staff in college. Being part of Pembroke College also positively impacted my research, whether it was by discussing with other fellows, or by encouraging me to go and present my projects at conferences.
Pembroke College has a Junior Common Room (JCR) notable for its artistic wealth as well as its sporting prowess. For example, it had a painting by Francis Bacon bought for £150 in 1953 and sold in 1997 for £400,000. The funds were used by the JCR for a student support scheme and an artistic acquisition programme.
