Alaia possessed a passion for the arts from a young age, eventually studying sculpture in the local École des Beaux-Arts in Tunis. In 1957, he moved to Paris and worked for some of the biggest names in the fashion industry at the time, including Christian Dior, Guy Laroche and Thierry Mugler.

29 de sept. de 2023 · Two years ago, the Cristobal Balenciaga Museum in Spain put on an exhibition, “Alaïa and Balenciaga: Sculptors of Shape,” of some 100 works drawn from the collection of Azzedine Alaïa. Alaïa had died in 2017, after taking a bad fall in his fashion house in the Marais section of Paris, the same building where he also lived.

This first Paris retrospective, presented in the Palais's newly renovated galleries and in the Matisse Room at the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, comprises a selection of seventy iconic models retracing a unique creative career.
