Entre los siglos VIII-IX se produjo una oleada de invasiones de vikingos y musulmanes que acabaron con la división del Imperio Carolingio, por lo que Europa occidental quedaba en manos de reyes guerreros que luchaban con los nuevos pueblos asaltantes.
