Bentham’s ideas laid the groundwork for more complex Utilitarian philosophies, like those of John Stuart Mill, who introduced the distinction between higher and lower pleasures. Despite criticism, Utilitarianism remains a significant thread in the fabric of modern ethical discussions, influencing debates in areas such as animal rights, bioethics, and political policy.
Bentham, however, soon became disillusioned with the law, especially after hearing the lectures of the leading authority of the day, Sir William Blackstone (1723–80). Instead of practising law, he decided to write about it, and he spent his life criticising the existing law and suggesting ways for its improvement.
