William Shakespeare married a woman named Anne Hathaway in November 1582, and they remained married until Shakespeare’s death. They had three children together: Susanna, Judith, and Hamnet. While there is a lack of evidence about the nature of their relationship, when Shakespeare died in 1616 he left Anne his “second-best bed” in his will.

Anne Hathaway died in 1623, aged 67, and was buried in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, next to her husband, on August 8. Her grave records that: ‘Heere lyeth interred the body of Anne, wife of William Shakespeare, who depted this life the 6th day of August. 1623 being of the age of 67 yeares’.

Their only son, Hamnet – the name a variant of Hamlet – died in 1596, aged only 11. Presumably, like his father, he had been a pupil at the free grammar school, though its records from this period don’t survive.
