By 1968, he had formed Grin, a proto-power trio built around his weighty riffs and for whom he was also singer and chief songwriter. Soon after this he met Neil Young, sneaking backstage at a local club to seek him out.
Lofgren bounced between working with Grin and playing with Young for several years, also appearing on the Tonight’s the Night album and tour (he later rekindled his association with Young on 1982’s Trans and then again for Young’s 1993 Unplugged appearance). Lofgren would maintain a close musical relationship with Young, appearing on his Tonight’s the Night album and tour among others. He was also briefly a member of Crazy Horse, appearing on their 1971 LP and contributing songs to their catalogue.
