De Afrikaanse wilde kat of Nubische kat (Felis lybica) is een katachtige.De soort werd lange tijd als ondersoort van de wilde kat (Felis silvestris) gezien, maar wordt sinds 2017 als aparte soort beschouwd. De wetenschappelijke naam van deze soort werd gepubliceerd door Johann Reinhold Forster in 1780.. De gedomesticeerde kat stamt af van de Afrikaanse wilde kat.

Felis silvestris lybica, also known as the African wildcat, is the direct ancestor of domesticated cats. Originating in the Fertile Crescent in the Near East Neolithic period and ancient Egypt in the Classical period, these wildcats have played a significant role in the evolution and domestication of our beloved house cats.
Se parece al gato doméstico (Felis silvestris catus), pero es más robusto y bastante más grande que la mayoría de éstos; sólo se acercan a su tamaño los de algunas razas gigantes. También es más grande y tiene el pelo más largo y tupido que el gato montés africano (Felis silvestris lybica), antecesor del doméstico.
