The award is named after Jean Hersholt - the Danish actor and translator who co-founded the Motion Picture Relief Fund. He also served as the Academy President during a crucial phase in the organization’s history. He died of cancer on June 2, 1956, and almost immediately, the Academy established the 'Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award'.
