Born Émilie-Louise Delabigne in 1848, to an alcoholic father and a mother who supported the family with a mixture of laundry and sex work, she went from working in a confectioner’s shop at the age of ten, to a clothing shop on the glamorous Champ de Mars at thirteen, to modelling for the painter Corot.
