Sledge was, samen met Otis Redding en Wilson Pickett, één van de belangrijkste stemmen van de ‘Southern soul’. Sledge’s hoogtijdagen lagen tussen 1966 en 1975. Daarna nam hij weinig albums op. Na een lange periode zonder albums bracht Sledge in 1994 een comebackalbum (Blue Night) uit . Ook verscheen er in 2010 nog een bluesalbum.
