John Cairncross, the youngest of four boys and four girls of Alexander Cairncross (1865–1947) and his wife, Elizabeth Wishart (1875–1958), was born in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 25th July 1913. His father was an ironmonger and his mother, a schoolteacher. John Cairncross attended the village school before Hamilton Academy.
