J. R. R. Tolkien nació el 3 de Enero de 1892 en la ciudad de Bloemfestein de "Orange Free State", África. Hijo del banquero Arthr Reuel Tolkien y de la misionera Mabel Suffield. Se mudaron a Sarehole, pueblo rural a las afueras de Birmingham donde Tolkien vivió hasta 1903.
