In Sri Lanka, the rusty-spotted cat is protected in the Fauna and Flora Protection (Amendment) Act, No. 22 of 2009, under Schedule ll, which lists the species as a strictly protected mammal. The species is fully protected in most of its range and hunting and trade of the animal is banned in India and Sri Lanka.

The rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus) is one of the cat family's smallest members. Historical records are known only from India and Sri Lanka. In 2012, it was also recorded in the western Terai of Nepal. Since 2016, the global wild population is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.
