Independence Park spans over an area of 12.5 hectares (31 acres). It has a lake in the center of it. The lake is full of water lilies on the water's surface, however the water is brownish in most places. The park also contains an open-air auditorium, which has musical performances on weekends.

My favorite part is the beautiful gardens, it's fun to just go and explore. There are also statues and playgrounds so the whole family can find something to do."
Independence Park History. In 1907, Irving Park area residents petitioned Mayor Fred Busse for the creation of parks in their neighborhood. Mayor Busse referred the request to the city's Special Park Commission, which inspected potential park properties, including the longtime site of the neighborhood's annual Independence Day celebration.
