Steve Woolam nahm sich 1971 das Leben und wurde für die erste Live-Besetzung 1972 von Wilfred Gibson ersetzt. Da Roy Wood live nicht mehr als ein Instrument spielen konnte, welches sich zwischen Gitarre, Bass und Cello abwechselte, wurden Andy Craig, Hugh McDowell und Mike Edwards als Cellisten engagiert.

Woolam died by suicide that same year. Hunt started in Brummie psychsters Breakthru, then joined brass-rockers Hannibal for a 1970 album on B & C.
In 1972, Gibson replaced original ELO violinist Steve Woolam and performed in their first live concert at the Greyhound Pub in Croydon, Surrey. Gibson would later play violin on the ELO II album, including on their cover of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven", which became a top ten hit in the UK in September 1973.
