He graduated from Mattanawcook Academy in 1978, and joined the U.S. Army that same year on 4 December1978 at age 18. He became a Special Forces Engineer with 2nd Battalion 10th Special Forces Group.

On October 3rd, 1993, MSG Gordon, while serving as sniper team leader, volunteered to be inserted into the crash site of a downed helicopter that was undergoing intense enemy fire. Despite being denied at first, MSG Gordon insisted on providing aid and was eventually granted permission to assist.

30 de ago. de 2021 · The ceremony held was to unveil a 10-foot-tall bronze sculpture of Master Sergeant Gary Gordon. Gordon was a native of Lincoln. He gave the ultimate sacrifice while rescuing a downed helicopter crew in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Oct. 3, 1993. Gordon died on a rescue mission, trying to save fellow troops who had survived a helicopter crash.
MSG Gordon was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for these actions above and beyond the call of duty. We are keeping the story and legacy of MSG Gary Gordon alive by constructing a memorial will be a life-size likeness of MSG Gordon atop a granite base.
