A dependable straightman to a range of top comedians, Thornton appeared in Tony Hancock’s classic episode The Blood Donor (1961) before achieving wider recognition as Captain Peacock in the sitcom Are You Being Served? (1972-85). He subsequently enjoyed a regular role as Truly in Last of The Summer Wine (1997-2010).

The Frank J. Thornton YMCA Aquatic Center was built in partnership with Henrico County to provide citizen of Henrico's east end a place to swim, learn water safety and have access to safe aquatic facilities. Construction began in 2019 with a grand opening in September 2020.
