Rebecca Walker was born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1969. She is the daughter of Mel Leventhal and Alice Walker . Her father is white and Jewish and a lawyer who was active in the Civil Rights movement in Mississippi. Her mother is the well-known African American writer of The Color Purple and many other books.
