The force from the hit that causes a concussion makes the head and brain move back and forth rapidly, leading to brain cell damage and chemical changes in the brain. A concussion should be taken seriously.
Key points about concussion. A blow or a jolt to the head can cause a concussion. Symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or trouble thinking can happen right away, or they may come on gradually over time. Call a healthcare provider right away or go to the emergency room if a person loses consciousness after a blow to the head.
Symptoms. A concussion can affect memory, judgment, reflexes, speech, balance and muscle coordination. People with concussions often report a brief period of amnesia or forgetfulness, where they cannot remember what happened immediately before or after the injury.
