And the cynics were blown away, in a cacophony of critical acclaim and chart appeal. The album made it to no.9 in the UK and no.28 in America. It was the band’s best chart performance since 1975’s Sabotage.
Heaven is generally construed as a place of happiness, sometimes eternal happiness. Hell is often portrayed populated with demons, who torment the damned. Many are ruled by a death god, such as Nergal, the Hindu Yama, or some other dreadful supernatural figure (e.g. Satan).

Heaven and Hell è il primo album registrato dal gruppo dopo l'uscita di Ozzy Osbourne avvenuta all'inizio del 1979 a causa di divergenze dovute all'uso di stupefacenti e alcool.Per sostituire Osbourne fu contattato Ronnie James Dio, cantante statunitense che già in passato aveva vantato collaborazioni con gruppi noti come gli Elf e i Rainbow di Ritchie Blackmore.
