John Glen was born in 1932 in Sunbury-on-Thames, a suburb of London in South East England. He lived there with his parents and two sisters Margaret and Joyce. In 1939 when John was seven, his family heard the declaration of war on the radio, and the next day they constructed a makeshift air raid shelter.
