W ith its dunderhead millionaires, erudite bums, effulgently dysfunctional families, and beneficent providence, My Man Godfrey is the Depression comedy par excellence. It is also, superficially at least, a movie about the Depression. A suicidal millionaire regains his zest for living when he discovers the worthy poor.
My Man Godfrey was based on Eric Hatch's 1935 novel and scripted by Hatch and Morrie Ryskind, with uncredited contributions from Robert Presnell and Zoë Akins.The film was directed by Gregory La Cava and remains one of his best known films. La Cava was a former cartoonist who directed animated shorts, making more than 100, before he turned to live action film making.

My Man Godfrey is a 1936 American screwball comedy film directed by Gregory La Cava. The screenplay was written by Morrie Ryskind, with uncredited contributions by La Cava, based on 1101 Park Avenue, a short novel by Eric Hatch. The story concerns a socialite who hires a derelict to be her family's butler, only to fall in love with him.

Though the family is in a ludicrous shambles, his rationality serves as an anchor for the film and helps to explain the screwballishness.
