The enduring merits celebrating the subculture remain and while Smalley reminds us to not be beholden to the past and stagnate our present, he acknowledges history’s omnipresence but it’s what we do with its power that can help shape the future.

Punk legend Dave Smalley, who has been the lead singer of bands like DYS, Dag Nasty, Down by Law, and the first lead singer of All, has been recently diagnosed with cancer. Friends and family of the singer and guitarist have started a GoFundMe to help with the expenses for Smalley’s ongoing battle with cancer.

It started in the late ‘60s with the Beatles White Album and all the San Francisco hippie stuff, but then it permeated from a minority mindset into mainstream culture.
After serving time as a roadie for Dag Nasty, Dave Smalley officially joined the band in February 1986. He received a scholarship to attend school in Israel, and left Dag Nasty in June of 1986. Biography. After Dave Smalley left All in 1989, he formed Down by Law with Chris Bagarozzi on guitar, Ed Urlik on bass and Dave Naz on drums.
