Der Appaloosa zeichnet sich durch einen kompakten, quadratischen und muskulösen Körperbau aus. Er hat einen kurzen bis mittellangen, gut bemuskelten Rücken, eine schräge kräftige Schulter und eine muskulöse, schräg abfallende Kruppe. Dies ermöglicht dem Appaloosa, kurze Strecken sehr schnell zu rennen und ein hohes Maß an Wendigkeit.
