North Country School was founded in 1938 by Walter and Leonora Clark. Leonora Clark’s sister and brother in law, Helen and Douglas Haskell, had assumed leadership of Camp Treetops in Lake Placid in 1926. Both couples’ educational philosophies were influenced by John Dewey and the Progressive Education Movement.
