The sextet was formed in Missouri during the early '70s, consisting of guitarists John Dillon and Steve Cash, blues harpist/singer/guitarist Randle Chowning, drummer/guitarist/singer Larry Lee, keyboard player Buddy Brayfield, and bassist-vocalist Michael Granda, and was signed to A&M Records in 1973.

Former early band member Buddy Brayfield, now Dr. Sam Brayfield is a family practice, hospice and palliative care physician in Osage Beach, Missouri and plays with a local band 'Buddy and the Notes'. For the first time since 1980, Brayfield rejoined the group for a reunion concert at Gillioz Theater in September 2010 that included four of the original six members.
In 1976, co-founder Buddy Brayfield left the band to pursue a successful medical career. Brayfield recommended Ruell Chappell be hired to fill the vacancy, so Chappell toured with the Daredevils through 1980, playing keyboards and contributing background vocals on the albums Don’t Look Down in 1977 (also recorded at Caribou Ranch), and It’s Alive in 1978.
