Crosscut Saw sees the reformed Groundhogs with second guitarist Dave Wellbelove, sparring with the legendary Tony McPhee. “Musically I’d gone back to the basics,” McPhee told Sounds, the addition of a doodle of synth and a second guitarist notwithstanding.
The Groundhogs' Crosscut Saw is a little better than their previous recording. There is that great strident blues guitar from Tony T. S. McPhee and solid blues tunes. Two thirds of the band are new but they don't miss a beat. They were then and are now still a heavy blues rock band with a fantastic lead guitarist, Tony McPhee.
