This is one of the most visual recordings I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Full disclosure — when I heard about this project for the first time I was very excited... but I was excited more about Nick Hornby than Ben Folds!
Throughout his career, Folds has created an enormous body of genre-bending musical art that includes pop albums as the front man for Ben Folds Five, multiple solo rock albums, as well as unique collaborative records with artists from Sara Bareilles and Regina Spektor, to Weird Al and William Shatner.
Folds’ fluency on the piano and his unique voice were the centrepiece of the group and, in the decade since the Five’s unfortunate demise, these two attributes remain at the centre of all the music Folds produces. Mercifully, there's none of that on Lonely Avenue, Folds' fourth solo album, and it's safe to say that it's got pretty much everything to do with the fact it's not his own lyrics. For this little experiment, Folds has taken lyrics written by Nick Hornby – yes, he of High Fidelity and About a Boy book-writing fame – and put them to his own melodies and compositions.
