Clegg formierte 1985 seine zweite multiethnische Band Savuka (dt. „Wir sind erwacht“), die er als Begleitband für seine Auftritte verstand. Als Kopf von Savuka strebte Clegg eine Mischung von Rock und Mbaqanga (Township Jive) an. 1987 erschien das Album Third World Child.
Later that year, Johnny Clegg released his first solo album "Third World Child". He also formed Savuka, another inter-racial crossover band in 1986, blending African music with European (especially Celtic) influences. One EP and four albums were released between 1986 and 1993 before that band was terminated.
